Ricardo Matínez (Santiago de Chile, Chile, 1956)

To talk about Ricardo Martínez is to consider the history of editorial illustration in Spain over the past 4 decades. Along with Nacho, he invented Goomer, a well known comic character from the pages of El País. Ricardo is synonymous with fans of comic strip on account of his satirical strip for the newspaper, El Mundo to this very day.

His work has won him several prestigious awards that include 8 gold medals and a “Special Jury Recognition” from the Society of Newspaper Design. Several more golds from the Malofiej awards in Spain, he received the International Press Award from then Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan. He was also given the Tono award by the Community of Madrid. Martínez was also given three Haxtur awards from the Gijón Comic Festival. The Gat Perich, awarded by Barcelona newspaper editors and the Mingote, awarded by Spanish Newspaper Directors also adorn his trophy list.

His work has been the subject of numerous exhibitions around the world. Ricardo counts the like of The New Yorker, Foreign Affairs, Time, Science, Harvard Alumni Magazine, Sports Illustrated, Scientific American, Harper’s, Texas Monthly among his clients. Brands such as Coca Cola, American Express, 7-Up, Telefónica, Madrid City Council and UNICEF have all called upon his talents over the years.
