Typical Spanish
La Fiambrera Art Gallery celebrates Spring and anticipates Summer with Typical Spanish, the second solo show by Barcelona resident and Galician artist Branda. The exhibition comprises 17 carvings decorated in vibrant colours. These are accompanied by work on paper and sculptures in wood from the artist’s workshop. Typical Spanish can be visited at La Fiambrera until June 3.
Typical Spanish is a slogan that sounds as old as another well known phrase, Spain is Different. Branda entertainingly celebrates that which is so Madrid (and so Spanish). As untranslatable as his interpretation of the cañí, the cheesy and folkloric that connects bullfighter attire to funny hats of the Guardia Civil. He also connects flamenco and tunos to characters from early Almodovar films, and Luis García Berlanga’s “La Escopeta Nacional”.
Branda (Óscar Brandariz) is passionate about modern costumbrismo and popular culture in general. His laser sharp observation allows him to capture forensic detail in his unique style (on paper or wood) to offer his singular vision without questioning concepts or making value judgments.
