Space Oddity

Space has fascinated mankind since the beginning of time. The stars and constellations, the planets, comets, eclipses and the gods that governed the destinies of the world and its inhabitants from the Cosmos … From African petroglyphs and the Palaeolithic caves paintings to the present day, passing through all the great civilizations of Antiquity, space has attracted man either by religion, superstition, science, philosophy and, as it could not be otherwise, has inspired Art in all ages.

The influence of Space is channelled to la Fiambrera artists through its interpretation in 20th century pop culture. From the great names of science fiction literature such as Jules Verne, Isaac Asimov or Arthur C. Clarke to TV shows like The Twilight Zone, Lost in Space, V, Alf and Futurama to name just a few. Big screen feature films such as Star Trek, Star Wars, Close Encounters, 2001 A Space Odyssey, and Mars Attacks were also influences as well as B movie imagery. Similarly NASA’s educational documentaries and all the space race landmarks from the previous half-century are also represented. Names like Sputnik, Telstar, the dog Laika, Gagarin, the Apollo Program, Neil Armstrong, Discovery, Voyager and Skylab all serve to inspire the imaginations of the artists and, through the works they’ve created for this exhibition, visitors are likely to be inspired too.

La Fiambrera Art Gallery is four years old and celebrates this anniversary with SPACE ODDITY named after the famous David Bowie song. Some thirty of the international artists that La Fiambrera represents has provided a thematic work on the subject the final frontier that is SPACE specifically for this event.
