Alter

Masks have been around almost as long as human beings. From the lost tribes of the Pacific Islands to comic book superheroes, from theatrical representations of classical Greece until to the ubiquitous masks of Anonymous in the here and now, masks have been used for many purposes. In a ritual dance enacted in the Amazon jungle or during the performance of a Cyberpunk group, masks are often used to hide our true selves. Or to allow us to pretend to be someone else. Intrigued by what they hide, the intention behind their use and what this may represent, Joaquín Rodríguez draws and transforms all manner of familiar disguise to feature in ALTER. Ancestral folklore masks sit alongside those made famous by contemporary culture and familiar characters. His own fantastic creations also appear in which totem poles coexist with biotechnological imagery and oriental deities. We glimpse essence and intention without true identities being revealed. Come and contemplate what is behind the masks.

ALTER is the second exhibit in La Fiambrera by Joaquín Rodríguez. It indicates an evolution that is integral to the development of an artist who is committed to his work and the reach of his abilities. An innate talent for drawing, together with a disciplined technique create spectacular, sometimes overwhelming results when we look closely and contemplate the meticulousness of his stroke. Twisting reality and shaping his fantasies with just a humble ballpoint pen, the characters become free and their gestures more dramatic. Joaquin Rodriguez brings realism to the edge of surrealism in ALTER to comment on the purpose of why a mask is so important depending upon what we intend to hide and what it might reflect about the true identity of the person wearing it.
